EMR Shopping?

Finding Your Way in a Crowded Marketplace

By Pamela Moore | September 15, 2002

No matter what questions you ask, settling on an EMR won't be easy. Some physicians take as long as six months to make a decision. Others, like Voelker, are still looking after 12 months. "There is not a sample road map or path to follow," Blair agrees, but clearly defining the business and clinical objectives will provide a shortcut no matter where the road leads.

Pamela L. Moore, senior editor of practice management for Physicians Practice, can be reached at pmoore@physicianspractice.com.

This article originally appeared in the September/October 2002 issue of Physicians Practice.

In Summary

Picking out an EMR is not easy. The marketplace is crowded, and it's hard to know where to start. These tips can help:

* Reach consensus with your partners about what you need an EMR to do. A vague desire to go paperless is not grounds for the sizable investment an EMR demands. Cutting out transcription costs or improving coding compliance is.

* Look only at products that meet the goals you define for your practice - and don't pay for other bells and whistles you don't need.

*  Test programs to make sure you will spend as little time as possible putting information into the system.

* Take into account the financial stability and implementation time of vendors.
