ICD-10: From Politics to Preparation

ICD-10: From Politics to Preparation

While the true reason for the inclusion of an ICD-10 delay in a congressional bill regarding the Medicare sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula is still unclear, Sue Bowman of American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) says it was "purely for political reasons" and had "nothing to do" with the readiness for or value of ICD-10 occurring in 2014.

In this video, Bowman, senior director of coding policy and compliance for AHIMA, looks at the delay, the true cost (in billions) of waiting one year to implement the new coding system, and gives training how-tos for medical practices to make the most of the new timeline for implementation.

The video was recorded at AHIMA's ICD-10 Summit in Washington, D.C., prior to the announcement of the new Oct. 1, 2015, ICD-10 implementation date.
