Physicians Using More Technology Than Suspected
Tech survey yields surprising results
Baltimore, Maryland — September 29, 2005 — Flying in the face of popular assumptions that physicians are old-fashioned and slow to adopt technology, a recent survey conducted by Physicians Practice, America’s Leading Practice Management Journal, revealed that physicians are in fact happy to use technology – if it works and is affordable.
Among the survey results:
* 42% of physicians say they have an electronic medical record (EMR), and most have seen or expect to see a positive return on their EMR investment
* 20% of physicians say they have selected but not fully implemented an EMR
* 37% of physicians bought their practice management software within the past year
* 66% of physicians say their software does not do everything they’d like it to
* In addition, the survey uncovered physician complaints that EMRs are unwieldy to implement, practice management reporting tools are spotty, and many have doubts about the security of electronic patient information
Pamela L. Moore, Ph.D., CPC, senior editor for Physicians Practice, and author of “Taming the Beast,” an article analyzing the survey results published in the September issue of Physicians Practice, had this to say about the surprising conclusions:
“Everyone from President George W. Bush to major HMOs imply that if physicians would get more tech-savvy, the United States health system would be redeemed. Well, physicians told us they are happy to use technology, but only if it works and is affordable.”
