Pacemaker Coding

Article

Here's medical coding guidance regarding battery replacement for a pacemaker.

Question: A surgeon performed a battery change of a pacemaker. I have looked for the CPT code, and from what I understand from the CPT book, I would bill for the insertion and removal of the batteries. Are codes 33212 and 33233 OK? The doctor removed the old batteries and replaced them with new ones.

Answer: You are correct. The replacement of a battery or pulse generator requires two codes, one for the removal and another for the insertion. You’d pick 33212 or 33213, depending on whether it’s a single or dual chamber, and 33233.
