I've been using your online calculator giving benchmarks for E&M code usage by specialty. It's great, but I'm wondering where the data comes from. Can I access it, too?

Question: I've been using your online calculator giving benchmarks for E&M code usage by specialty. It's great, but I'm wondering where the data comes from. Can I access it, too?

Answer: The data comes from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It reflects what providers have reported to them through their claims.

You can find the full file (updated for 2003) on E&M use by specialty at: www.cms.hhs.gov/statistics/feeforservice/default.asp

Scroll down to "Evaluation and Management (E&M) Codes by Specialty" about halfway down the page under the heading "Medicare Utilization for Part B (Supplementary Medical Insurance SMI)."
