Billing for Wasted Injections

We wasted a 100 mg vial of Venofer because the nurse could not get the patient’s vein. This was indicated on the meds inventory as a wasted vial, but the nurse mentioned that she spent a considerable amount of time. Is there any way to bill for the time spent?

Answer: No, I’m sorry. I am not aware of any CPT or HCPCS codes you might use for this. It doesn’t fall under E&M since the injection doesn’t meet those parameters. Pediatricians run into this all the time with all those squirming kids and reluctant parents.
