Texas lawmakers haven't met since 2025, and the 90th Legislature doesn't convene until Jan. 12, 2027. The rulebook kept moving anyway. Laws from the last session took effect on Sept. 1, 2025, and Jan. 1, 2026, and at least one of them carries real penalties. None of these laws got the attention a federal rule does. Several of them land in parts of the practice nobody reviews very often: vendor contracts, portal settings, the lobby wall and the prior authorization log. A practice can be out of compliance for a year without noticing, and it usually finds out when a patient complaint or a licensing board inquiry arrives.
Most of the fixes are administrative, and many take an afternoon. Here are six places to check before the next session starts writing new rules.
