Keeping your practice staffed during the summer

Hey there folks, my name is Keith Reynolds, I’m the editor of Physicians Practice and this is the P2 Management Minute. Here are two fast moves to keep your practice fully staffed this summer.

1) Line up locums and temps in advance

Don’t wait for the first sick call. Pre-contract with at least two agencies for front-office and billing temps, and keep a short list of locum tenens physicians or NPs for extended vacations. Reputable locum partners can handle travel, housing, credentialing, and malpractice—so you keep revenue flowing without burning out your core team.

2) Sweeten the unpopular shifts

Recruiting is still a top headache for many groups, and summer Fridays or late afternoons are hard to staff. Offer micro-bonuses, small gift cards, or first pick of future PTO to cover those slots. Add public recognition—‘Summer MVP’ shout-outs at staff meetings—to reinforce teamwork and make the tough shifts feel worth it
