Managing mentorships
Build a stronger mentorship program with two proven steps in this quick P2 Management Minute.
Hey there folks, my name is Keith Reynolds, I’m the editor of Physicians Practice and this is the P2 Management Minute. Here are two quick moves to launch a high-impact
1) Launch with a roadmap and calendar
Kick off every new mentor–mentee pair with a 30-minute orientation that sets expectations: how often to meet, what success looks like, and confidentiality boundaries. Put it on the calendar—weekly for the first month, bi-weekly for months two and three, then monthly. Use a shared one-page plan with milestones and a simple progress checklist so everyone knows what’s next.
2) Coach your coaches
Even natural teachers need a tune-up. Give mentors a one-page cheat sheet: lead with questions (‘ask before telling’), use positive reinforcement, set SMART goals, and map career steps together. Offer a quarterly 30-minute mentor huddle to swap tactics and troubleshoot common issues.
Clear plan, skilled mentors—that’s a program that sticks.
