CMS Extends Meaningful Use Tech Hardship Exception
Robert Tennant of the Medical Group Management Association explains the ins and outs of CMS extending its hardship exception regarding meaningful use technology.
CMS has decided to give eligible professionals a little more time to claim a hardship exception when it comes to demonstrating meaningful use of Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT). The agency had set the deadline for providers at July 1, 2014, and for hospitals at Apr. 1, 2014, respectively, but will now accept applications up through Nov. 30, 2014.
The exception is for eligible professionals and hospitals that have been unable to fully implement 2014 edition CEHRT due to vendor delays and eligible professionals who were unable to attest by Oct. 1, 2014, and eligible hospitals unable to attest by July 1, 2014, using a combination of 2011 and 2014 edition CEHRT.
