The 10 federal policy changes that will hit medical practices hardest in 2027

Medicaid work requirements, new remote monitoring rules and an electronic prior authorization deadline all land Jan. 1, and that's only part of what MGMA told practice leaders to watch.

Medicaid work requirements and a deadline for payers' electronic prior authorization systems arrive Jan. 1, 2027. If the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) finalizes its proposal, so do new limits on who can perform remote monitoring.

Government affairs staff from the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) laid out those changes and more at the MGMA Annual Conference 2026 in San Antonio, in a Washington update session and a member town hall.

Physicians Practice was in San Antonio at the MGMA Annual Conference, Sept 27-30, celebrating 100 years of MGMA, attending sessions and speaking with industry leaders. Follow our coverage on our MGMA conference page.
