Fine tuning your device policy

Lock down your practice’s cybersecurity with two device-policy essentials in this quick P2 Management Minute.

Hey there folks, my name is Keith Reynolds, I’m the editor of Physicians Practice and this is the P2 Management Minute. Here are two must-have device policy moves to tighten your cybersecurity.

1) Write an acceptable use statement

Spell out—in plain English—how staff may and may not use practice-owned and personal devices on the job. Cover: strong passwords and MFA, no storing PHI in personal apps, encryption-on by default, approved software only, Wi-Fi rules (no public hotspots without VPN), and a ‘report lost or stolen within 15 minutes’ requirement. Use the Physicians Practice’s handbook primer’s sample language to keep it clear and consistent.

2) Define device ownership and scope

List every covered gadget so there’s no ambiguity: desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, wearables, USB drives, and any IoMT gear. State who owns what, require MDM enrollment, minimum OS versions, automatic patching, and asset tags. Set rules for BYOD: separate work profiles, remote wipe consent, and no unapproved storage or peripherals.

Clear rules and complete coverage, that’s your device-policy backbone. For more bite-size practice tips and tricks make sure you visit PhysiciansPractice.com.

Thanks for watching I’ll see you Monday on the P2 Management Minute!
