Stop letting your EHR slow care with the tips in this quick P2 Management Minute.

Hey there folks, my name is Keith Reynolds, I’m the editor of Physicians Practice and this is the P2 Management Minute. Here are two signs it may be time for a new EHR.

1) Your EHR is slowing down your staff

If nurses and front-desk teams spend more time fighting screens than helping patients, that’s a problem. Watch for long load times, freezes or crashes, and ‘eight-clicks-for-one-task’ workflows. Clunky systems aren’t just inefficient—they can be less safe.
Quick test: Pick three common tasks—e-prescribe, refills, and referrals. Time them, count clicks, and log errors for one week. If performance drags or workarounds multiply, escalate with your vendor—or start evaluating alternatives.

2) You’re documenting more than you’re caring

Excessive documentation fuels burnout. Many physicians spend hours a day in the EHR—often close to two hours of admin for every one hour of direct care. If your system forces duplicate data entry, lacks smart templates, or won’t integrate with dictation, labs, and patient messaging, it’s stealing face time.
Quick test: Track after-hours EHR time and note any note bloat. If templates, shortcuts, or voice tools can’t cut charting time meaningfully, reassess your platform.

If your EHR slows your team and steals your time, shop smarter options. For more bite-size practice tips and tricks make sure you visit PhysiciansPractice.com.
