Pay cuts, payer AI and the staff who keep leaving: What we heard at MGMA's 100th annual conference

Fact checked by: Keith A. Reynolds

A six-month downcoding check, the one number to benchmark next year and what staff turnover costs a practice were among the takeaways from MGMA's centennial conference in San Antonio.

The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) held its 100th annual conference Sept. 27-30 in San Antonio. Consultant Taya Gordon shared a six-month report that shows whether payers are downcoding a practice's claims, and MGMA's Andrew Swanson named the one number administrators should benchmark next year.

Medical Economics Senior Editor Richard Payerchin, Physicians Practice Managing Editor Keith Reynolds and Medical Economics Associate Editor Austin Littrell were in attendance.

This episode brings back highlights from interviews at and after the conference with Gordon of Atlas & Perpetua Healthcare Consulting, MGMA's Swanson, Anders Gilberg, Madison Hynes, Julia Rosen and acting CEO Akash Madiah, along with Kem Tolliver of Medical Revenue Cycle Specialists, Doral Jacobsen of Prosper Beyond, Rachel Brace of BackPocket Talent, Dale Patterson, M.D., of Beacon Medical Group, health care attorney Tatiana Melnik and former NFL long snapper Jon Dorenbos.

Jacobsen explains what to bring to a payer negotiation, and Brace compares the cost of turnover with the cost of a retention bonus. Speakers also cover the proposed 2027 Medicare cuts, why billers quit and how to start using artificial intelligence (AI) with tools a practice already owns.
