2. Keep systems updated and patched

Unpatched software remains one of the most common entry points for ransomware. CISA emphasizes regular updates as a foundational “protect” control. That means turning on automatic updates for your EHR, routers, and even medical IoT devices. As Medical Economics points out, most ransomware attacks exploit flaws that already had available patches—so timely updates can close the door before attackers walk through it.
